Running Machines [Jul. 20th, 2005|11:08 am]

Well, here I am at home running the machines. Washing machine and dishwasher. I feel like a college kid who comes home to do laundry and eat. This is my 4th load of laundry, and when it's done I'll head back to Bodie. I'd be done with laundry altogether, except that we went hiking last night and I fell down twice and got really dirty. And just a little sore.

We went to Sunol for a "Tuesday Twilight" hike. The other evening hikes we've been on have been geared towards families with kids so I assumed that it would be an easy one. Indian Joe trail is NOT an easy one. The person leading the hike announced there would be about 10 up-and-down sections to the hike. By the third one I was lagging behind and the group kept having to wait for me. As soon as I caught up we marched on. I just couldn't do it. I sent Mike ahead to tell folks we were dropping out. It was a good decision. We sat and had a really good talk then ambled back at my pace. Much better. I didn't have the right shoes or my hiking staff and parts of the trail were slippery. Mike slipped once or twice, but I managed to do a full fanny plant and slide twice, the second time twisting my ankle. Good thing we weren't coming back after dark with the rest of the group. The ankle is a little sore, but not too bad. All in all we had a good hike. I just don't like to do the forced march thing and try to keep up with others.

The running of the dishwasher is another matter. I've been using a Nalgene bottle at work every day, usually draining it twice. I mostly drink water, but once in a while I have Kool-aid or Gatorade for variation. I wash it by hand now and then, but I feel like it doesn't really get clean. It still smells like Gatorade after I wash it. So I'm putting it through the dishwasher before I go. I also have my hat in there. Mom says hats wash well in the dishwasher. I'm not sure I believe it, but my uniform cap is sweat-stained and gross. If it doesn't work I'll buy a new hat, so it's worth a try.

I have a bunch of things to do before I go. I need to gather up some costume stuff and summer clothes and pack them. I may need to mend some things first. I want to take my camping gear with me, so I need to find it all. It's finally been warm enough to consider camping out on my days off. It would be an easy way to get out of Bodie for a bit without spending a bunch of money and driving all over. I need to take my camera. The one in the phone is cute, but I don't have any way of getting the pics out of the phone. I ought to go by the bank and fight with them about some checks they printed wrong. I should get a perscription re-filled, but the pharmacy makes me nuts. OK, I'll call them now... Perscription ordered. Now I just have to pick it up on my way out of town. Theoretically. I'll bet they don't have it ready. After all, I'm only giving them 2 1/2 hours notice. I also need to get clean and dressed before I do anything else. I'll have to wait for some hot water, though.

I'm now working 4 ten hour days, so I have 3 days off to come home. It feels like taking a vacation. Ten hours is a long day on my feet, but what else am I going to do up there? It's been nice to have 2 days at home.

Monday I went to the asthma doctor. My breathing ain't so good. I thought I was having allergy troubles due to mold in my humidifier, but it hasn't gone away. Now I'm on more medication. It seems to be helping. They put me on a machine at the doctor's office to push medication into my lungs. That was fun. The stuff had a bitter taste that made me drool, so I felt like I was drowning while I was on it. When I was finished I had a terrible case of the shakes. Thought I was channeling Katherine Hepburn. I think it helped my breathing at least.

Yesterday and today have been spent mostly at home. What a luxury! Even if I am doing laundry...

Last week deserves a post all its own.

I've been spending lots of quality time with my calendar this morning. How's August 2-4 for a visit from me? I know we'd talked about doing it after your anniversary, but that runs too close to my trip to Oklahoma.

Sounds good to me! Unfortunately I have a roommate now. Do you want to camp?

Let me know what kind of gear to bring.

Probably regular camping-type stuff. I'll check further with park people and my roommates. Maybe we can put you on our couch. It gets cold up there at night. I'll be off the days you are there, so if you like we could camp somewhere else. Bodie is pretty at night, though.

I'll give it some thought.

I'm sorry you had to drop out of the hike. I agree, it was more strenuous than the other Tuesday Twilights I've been on, but I like strenuous so I was ok with it. My mom and Katie both fell also so don't feel bad. I'm surprised I didn't go down because Wendy grabbed me twice trying to steady herself. Maybe I'm part mountain goat. We didn't get back to the visitor center until about 10:30, but we saw a lot of cool stuff like a bunch of red-legged frogs and Western pond turtles in the stock pond, and pallid bats in the High Valley barn. And we also saw a giant prickly pear but it was really dark by that time. Maybe we should have done lunch because we hardly got to talk at all. :(

Watch out for your Nalgene bottle in the dishwasher. The detergent can react with the plastic. Not a good thing. Better to wash it by hand like you were doing, and also rinse it with vinegar sometimes instead of washing it. Mine started to smell funny, and my teacher told me to throw it away. I guess that is a bad sign that the plastic is not right, but damn those things are expensive.

Hmm, Jenn the mountain goat? I wish you could have been at her party. It was pretty mellow, but fun. Greg came with me. We are doing very well. Thanks.
